Heirloom
Despite my persistent coughs and vicious globules of phelgm in my throat, THE DON and I went with UMI to JB last night on a special mission:- To pass to my aunt (Umi's cousin) a 24-year-old antique ceremonial dress for cute bubbly pretty girls.
This was hand sewn by my grandmother for me during my "cukur jambul" ceremony when I was a month old. She did it all by herself right down to the last labuci. Ain't it just lovely? I can't imagine the many hours she must have taken to sew this dress. What a labour of love !!
And since then, every girl born into the family will get the honour of wearing the dress on her first big day. This time, her 2 month old girl will wear it this Saturday at her cukur Jambul ceremony at the family madrasah in Temerloh, Pahang. Then in it will go into Umi's cupboard till the next girl comes along.
This is the lucky girl who'll get to wear my dress tomorrow. Syarifah Ra'diah Binte Syed Hassan Al-Atas
What amazes me is how the dress still looks like new even after all this years. All its labucis all still intact. I just hope the dress will make a full circle and my daughter will get to wear it someday.
