Water Water Everywhere ...........

Flood in squeky clean Singapore ?? Hard to believe huh?

It has been raining non-stop for almost 36 hrs now and its been COLD!!! But little did anyone expect SG to actually be flooded. Hahaha Bukit Timah, Jalan Besar, Rochor areas were the worst hit while other low-lying areas even in Shenton Way were not spared. Some areas had as much as 30-50cm of water above ground level, making car movement risky. Needless to say traffic was a standstill. Luckily all this happened during lunch time and so neither IS nor I were affected.

Such rainy days n flooding reminds me of the time when I was visiting my aunt n uncle in Kampung Bahru, KL back in 1986. (I was only 6 then) It rained non stop for two whole days but we didnt think anything of it. In fact that morning, my late father even made paper boats for me to sail on the water-logged front porch. Before we knew it, in a matter of hours, the water had risen to knee deep (waist deep for lil' tiny me !!!) The adults started shifting the tvs and furniture to top of cupboards and we all braved the water (by now it was waist high) to get to the neighbour's house across the street (their house was built on higher ground) Looking at the muddy yellow water with branches and other unrecognisable things floating I ( yup, u guessed it) WAILED IN HORROR!!!!!!!
Up till then, I had never been in such a "life-threatening" situation and was of course PANIC STRICKEN!!! I remember crying my heart out while wondering why the kids around the area were having so much fun sitting on mattresses using fallen tree branches as oars floating pass.

I also remember seeing soldiers in small sampans ferrying people from their houses to the main road a few streets down. I dun remember us taking the boats but sumhow we also got to the dry part of the city and eventually checked into a hotel. My ever generous late father even booked rooms for my aunts n uncle's friends for the night. Later on, it was discovered that a river bank sumwhere had burst thus aggravating that already wet low lying area. Since that day, I havn't been back to the place. (coz my aunt n uncle moved away after the flash flood) But that experience was surely sumthing I will never ever forget for the rest of my life...
